Just a little poll to see where people stand. Smile If you like, go ahead and tell us why you voted the way you did.

Fingon the Valiant, who healed the breach between the houses of Finwë and rescued his cousin Maedhros while the rest of the Noldor did nothing.

He also repelled the first dragon attack in history.

He was about to become the first to kill a balrog in single combat when one of the balrog's buddies stepped in and cheated.

And he is the source of one of the poignant passages in the Silm:
Quote:
Then Fingon looked towards Thangorodrim, and there was a dark cloud about it, and a black smoke went up; and he knew that the wrath of Morgoth was aroused, and that their challenge was accepted. A shadow of doubt fell upon Fingon's heart; and he looked eastwards, seeking if he might see with elven-sight the dust of Anfauglith rising beneath the hosts of Maedhros. He knew not that Maedhros was hindered in his setting-forth by the guile of Uldor the accursed, who deceived him with false warnings of assault from Angband.

But now a cry went up, passing up the wind from the south from vale to vale, and Elves and Men lifted their voices in wonder and joy. For unsummoned and unlocked for Turgon had opened the leaguer of Gondolin, and was come with an army ten thousand strong, with bright mail and long swords and spears like a forest. Then when Fingon heard afar the great trumpet of Turgon his brother, the shadow passed and his heart was uplifted, and he shouted aloud: 'Utúlie'n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatári, utúlie'n aurë! The day has come! Behold, people of the Eldar and Fathers of Men, the day has come!' And all those who heard his great voice echo in the hills answered crying: 'Auta i lómë! The night is passing!'

Within a few days he was dead... Crying or Very sad

Embarassed

I can't believe I forgot to put Fingon in the poll.

It wasn't intentional, I promise.

Although I must say that I prefer Finrod - perhaps not the fighter Fingon was, but I'm drawn to his loyalty and 'goodness', as well as his wisdom.

This is, of course, only including Elven Kings in Middle-earth...Fëanor wins, otherwise. Wink

I'm mostly a Silm guy, in which Finrod was only a supporting character. He seems really great but it would have been nice to have a story or two with Finrod as the main character. There's a lot more of him in HoME, I suppose, but I haven't gotten to it all yet.

Since there aren't any that I know of other than Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth, we have to go for what's the second best.

Writing them ourselves.

But if you've got HoME 10, DO read the Athrabeth (if you haven't already). It's my single top favorite Tolkien text. (And the background for Not for Arda over at Entmoot.)

Of course the main part of the HoME concerning Finrod is Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth which you've already read. Wink

But I'm actually referring to The Silmarillion - I think his part in 'Of Beren and Lúthien' makes him stick out as honourable, and just plain 'good.'

Gil-Galad was an elven king
of him the harpers sadly sing
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the mountains and the sea!

Took over leadership in utterly hopeless circumstances, made through the War of Wrath and proceeded to last longer than any of his predecessors. Uncertain paternity aside, definitely the elven king I would want to be living under in Middle Earth.

Orodreth. I don't know why. Razz I noticed his name was different from the others, though. But I really like all very much. Turgon, Fingon, Finrod, Fingolfin, all great characters. Smile

Oh man, please don't get me started. I don't know who I dislike more, Orodreth or Fëanor.
Wink
No offense intended to any of my fellow Dorthonionites (or is that Dorthonionor? Dorthonionia? I better stick with Man-talk. Elvish not DPR strong suit.)

I'd like to hear some Vanyar stories but I'm thinking there's probably very little to tell. Stories without antagonists are rarely worth hearing.

Have to admit I never got much out of the Vanyar...they seem a bit perfect for my taste. Wink

Indeed - and yet Ingwë is not challenged as king of the Eldalië Cool

I like Indis and Amárië - at least they had good taste in men. Razz
